January 2004 Weekend Program

Jan. 10
  • We're so manipulated by our fears."
  • The difference between a concern that leads to action, and the endless worry-loop.
  • Seeing when help is not necessary - recognizing the "me" in there.
  • "I'm afraid because I don't know" - is this fear truly free of knowing?
Jan. 11
  • Changing weather, moods, jobs... is there something that doesn't change?
  • Is there a controller? Or only the wiring to seek this and avoid that?
  • And something which can short-circuit that conditioning, making space.
  • Creating stories around one's talents, aptitudes. Are these talents mine?
  • I'm not sure I can say what brings presence. Either it's here, or ideas are.

April 2004 Retreat

Day 2
  • Does "samsara equal nirvana?" Doesn't an ideal, nirvana, add to the suffering?
  • What creates suffering?
  • When the energy is here, there's no one here to be hurt.
  • Is that our salvation, being here, not knowing what the next moment will bring?
  • Being that stillness which isn't separate from birdsong, motor hum... just that.

May 2004 Retreat

Day 1
  • Is there a chooser?
  • Does the notion of choice arise from thinking rather than looking directly?
  • To sit back quietly with all the factors of a decision, as many as reveal themselves.
  • Decision-making energy tends away from discomfort, toward what seems pleasing.
  • When self-centered motives are clearly seen, energy may move in less harmful ways.
Day 2
  • Is it possible to listen so completely - senses open, undivided - that it's all here?
  • There's nothing magical about a moment's presence.
  • It happens for all of us when wanting and fearing are quiet.
  • Fear coming into view as we sink into silence.
  • To listen so fully that "me" and "fear" are not two.
Day 3
  • Do we fulfill responsibilities through the image of being a responsible person?
  • Or because we see the consequences? Or just to do it! It's there.
  • Another's concern is my concern - there's just no me and you.
  • Guilt.
  • Is it possible for one moment to just listen to someone with whom you have history?
Day 4
  • "How do I know I'm seeing clearly?"
  • Is there the immediacy of listening, or is there the slightest veil of "I know that?"
  • A body-mind learning, mechanicalness slows down, energy stays here;
  • Self-condemnation lessens, too, since one sees where that narrow tunnel leads.
  • How to avoid covering up a child's openness?

September 2004 Retreat

Day 2
  • Wondering before the talk: how much thinking does there need to be ahead of time?
  • What motivates us? To impress or better someone? To share this love and beauty?
  • A loving awareness, no judgment.
  • Clarity - feet on the floor, breathing, with no division, no "me" in the middle.
  • What about this love? Usually we just speak of what obstructs it - self-concern.
